Significance of the deal
Stewart Mandel, college football senior columnist: For years, Oregon football has been synonymous with mega-donor Knight. Many wondered whether he and/or Nike would get into business with Ducks players once allowed to profit off their NIL. Well, here’s your answer.
Thibodeaux is seen as a potential No. 1 overall pick next spring. He’s the type of rare superstar-level player who may be in position to make six-figure NIL money wherever he played, but at Oregon, it’s fitting that his first deal is with Knight.
Now, Oregon coach Mario Cristobal can tell recruits, come to Eugene and the guy who designs Air Jordans will draw you a customized piece of art to sell.
What to expect from Nike in new NIL universe
Daniel Kaplan, business staff writer: What’s amazing about this Nike NFT, is how, less than a week after NIL came alive, it is no big deal. The news came on the same day a Miami gym owner pledged $540,000 to scholarship football players at the University of Miami, and scores of other endorsements since July 1.
Nike is only interesting insofar as it found a way in. The apparel and sneaker companies have team deals, and players generally are barred from competing in those team categories. So Nike, a University of Oregon sponsor, is backing the player here with the creation of an NFT, not by having the athlete endorse its products.
